DESCRIPTION OF THE PERFORMANCE

In the time of Herod and from time immemorial... It so happened that now the time of Herod has come again.

The “Vertep” resonates today with particular relevance, and poignancy in Ukraine, where war is raging and every individual must be saved. We offer not a canonical “Vertep”, but rather an experimental vision of this eternal plot, through object theatre and an original puppetry and theatrical approach.

FRAGMENTS OF REVIEWS

“They say that theatre is a reflection of our real life. At the moment, our life is a terrible nativity scene… But we believe the birds will fly in, fix their nests, and we will rebuild our homes, and our Ukraine will blossom, like the whole earth in the spring… And Herod will die, and it will be another, almost biblical miracle…

Amidst the pain of the past, you can recognize the destroyed cities of Ukraine in the board-houses - where the windows of the houses are broken, where lives are killed… Like blood, a red necklace… Like hope - birds, spring, faith... Faith in God and the Armed Forces, like we often say now.

We believe that the Son of God came to earth to save us, died and rose again, protecting humanity… And Ukraine will not break, protecting humanity, it will win and rise again!

The magical effect of dolls has long been known, from talisman charms, to witches' voodoos… So we believe that the message of the Ukrainian “Vertep” will have its effect!”

(Natalya Boychenko, “GX - news portal”, March 21, 2023)

“A simple name. A simple story that is more than 2000 years old. And a simple scenography by another famous Kharkiv resident - Kostiantyn Zorkin. Wood and metal, as one of the main binaries of the world. Even the symbolic language of the play is also simple. And while I usually like it complicated, there are different times. Now is the time when we all keep it simple. For those who did not betray us and themselves. For the ZSU. Because evil is not infinite, unlike truth and justice. Otherwise, the world would not last even 2000 years.
And since everything is so simple, there are few, almost no words in the play. Excluding songs and live music. But folk songs are not words, they are soul. There is a soul in the performance, it holds everything - both the most terrible scenes and the most human. Keeps the hall in tension, despite the fact that everyone knows everything in advance. And we know: Herod will perish. Angel will win, and Ukraine will win with him. People sing and cheer Jesus. Applause.”
