DESCRIPTION OF THE PERFORMANCE

“The Fourth Republic of Dreams” is an artistic and research project. The scenario and the method of artistic work have been based on the study of dreams of Polish males and females during the pandemics.

“The Third Reich of Dreams” by Charlotte Beradt has been one of the key inspirations for that project. Charlotte Beradt, who in the 1930’s was a collector of Berliners’ dreams found out that those reflect social processes and are a certain announcement of totalitarian dictatorship. Her book inspired the development of the method of psychoanalysis in the 1980's of the 20th century called “the social dreaming matrix”.

“The matrix proves that dreams may produce contents that may be juxtaposed with hidden social needs, phenomena or social movements" - says Dawid Żakowski, the director of the performance. “Within the framework of our project we managed to collectively implement the dreaming matrix. The first took place on July 17, 2020. Having analysed the matrix we have noticed that the first archetype that came into realisation was a child, a child that was in danger. And when we started to interpret the material of dreams, little did we know that soon there would be women’s strike and street rallies organised to protest against the verdict of the Constitutional Tribunal prohibiting abortion. It was hard to imagine for anybody that a child would become a symbol of today’s Poland with its clashes, polemics, discussions, conflicts and disputes in the public sphere."

The matrix being the main protagonist of „The Fourth Republic of Dreams” is analogical to the artificial intelligence that humankind tries to get closer to, by means of employment of the classical tools of sensitivity and emotional programming. It speaks in codes, the internal landscape and transformation. It models, decomposes, manipulates and flows through the performers’ bodies with all the related information that has been encrypted in the code of physical movement by the choreographer, Wojciech Grudziński, who employs such characteristic chorographical tools as bricolage, recycling and mush up.

FRAGMENTS OF REVIEWS

“These are poetic and raw stories. Made of known and unusual shapes - as dancer’s ribs the shape of which is often seen through fabrics of their outfits. This split between what’s individual and statistical is intriguing. There is an author to each hermetic and original story, which is often very personal. At the same time, the story is distanced and mediated.”
